Welcome to Hapuku Lodge and Tree Houses

Totally unique and luxurious accommodation on Kaikōura’s picturesque, rugged coast. A private haven for groups to relax in its intimate indoor/outdoor setting and a place from which to explore the larger maritime landscape of Kaikōura.

Hapuku Lodge and Tree Houses is located 12kms north of the world renowned eco-marine town of Kaikōura, on the South Island. It shares the land with a deer stud and olive grove, nestled between Kaikōura’s seaward mountain range and the famed Mangamaunu Bay.

This is a truly unique and contemporary country setting, perfect for groups travelling together, who desire a combination of “own-space” and togetherness with impeccable hospitality and amenities. There is a total of 14 bedrooms on offer across three distinct accommodations - Lodge, Tree Houses and Apartment.

Guests can settle into one of the five lush free-standing Treehouses - set 30 feet high in a grove of native Kanuka Trees. Each is named after the bird most curious about its construction. Panoramic views are there to savour from every angle, and the cantilevered decks are just the spot to overlook the deer wandering on the resident farm or eavesdrop on night-time wildlife scampering beneath.

The Lodge itself houses one lodge room and three suites, each with its own captivating charm. And, set beside the olive grove is the splendidly adorned three bedroom Olive House apartment. All rooms feature individual fireplaces, custom-designed furniture, tailor-made beds and mattresses, spacious bathrooms with heated floors and large soaking tubs.

All accommodations have breath taking views to the snow-capped mountains in one direction and to the rugged Pacific Coast - famously home to resident and migrating mammals - in the other.

At its heart, the Hapuku Lodge experience is all about a passion for good food and wine. Produce is sourced from the Lodge’s own herb and vegetable gardens, free-range chickens, an olive grove, as well as local market gardens. Wild game is a regular feature on the menu along with crayfish (lobster) and other locally sourced seafood. A delicious a la carte breakfast and three-course dinner are prepared by the team of in-house chefs.

Whilst on property, guests can enjoy the fabulous amenities of an in-house spa, sauna, jacuzzi, solar heated lap pool and gymnasium, or they can while the days away birdwatching, hiking, fishing or taming the surf break at Mangamaunu – which is only a short stroll away.

This property is available on an exclusive basis for groups of ten to 28.

In 2002 Kaikōura, as a township, was the first local authority in the world to become a Green Globe certified community. In addition, nearly every local operator has a green mission threaded through their operations, caring for the environment which brings tourists from all over the world.

Hapuku Lodge and Tree Houses recognise that guests may travel great distances to experience the spectacular scenery and maritime activities of Kaikōura. Their aim is to nurture this unique environment, restoring it through planting native trees, re-introducing native birds, and being sustainable in their operations.

The team at Hapuka plants a native New Zealand Tree on behalf of all guests; one for every booking. Within a month of staying at the Lodge, guests are sent a certificate with the GPS location of their tree. Through planting Hapuku Lodge creates a long-term carbon sink, offsetting a proportion of the carbon produced by guest travel and their own operations. Just as importantly, the plantings help replenish the local vegetation and thereby support the native bird populations, which include rare and endangered species.

Beyond planting a native tree for every room night, Hapuku Lodge and Tree Houses eco-efforts include:

  • Sourcing as much as possible of ingredients and products from local farmers and purveyors.

  • The kitchen garden is completely organic, growing seasonal vegetables and herbs.

  • The aim to reduce, recycle and compost with a goal of becoming a zero-waste community.

  • Timber used in construction and interiors are responsibly sourced or recycled and salvaged timbers.

  • The Tree Houses have small private fireplaces that are some of the most efficient fireplaces in the world.

  • All rooms have significant insulation and double glazing.

But perhaps the most unique way that Hapuku are giving back is through their sponsorship of marine mammal research conducted by MoanaMark. The Lodge has built the South Island’s only dedicated marine mammal laboratory on its property and a proportion of every guests stay is donated to local marine mammal research projects. Considering the importance of marine mammals to this region, the Wilson family, who founded and own the property, wanted to ensure that they are being kaitiaki (guardians) of the environment by working towards better knowledge and protection of these local taonga (treasures) for generations to come.

Signature Experience

The Secret Garden and Private Trails

Relax in the serenity of Hapuku Lodge and Tree House’s own secluded spaces during your stay.

The secret garden is a 75 square metre sunken lawn that is yours to enjoy, your way. Perhaps some peaceful moments on a sun lounger with your favourite book, or you may choose to share the space with friends and family playing an array of Hapuku’s lawn games.

Or, experience nature as you wander through the olive and kanuka grove enjoying the birdsong. Can you spot all the bird species that the treehouses took their names from? The trails may take you to the river or the famed Manganamu Bay’s surf beach. There are options aplenty.
